Label printers are specialized devices designed to handle various media types, primarily categorized by their printing technology: Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer. Selecting the right one depends on how long you need the labels to last and the environment they will be in.

Direct Thermal vs. Thermal Transfer
Feature Direct Thermal Thermal Transfer
How it Works Uses heat-sensitive paper that darkens when heated. Uses a heated ribbon to transfer ink onto the label.
Consumables No ink, toner, or ribbon required; only labels. Requires both labels and ink ribbons.
Durability Sensitive to light and heat; fades in 6–12 months. Highly durable; resists chemicals, UV, and moisture.
Best For Shipping labels, visitor passes, and receipts. Product labels, asset tracking, and outdoor use.

Custom labels are used on products for identification, branding, and billing. Labels can be made from materials like paper, PP, PET, or vinyl, which can be waterproof and durable.

First, the label design is created on a computer. The design includes the logo, product details, barcode or QR code, price, and manufacturing information.

For large quantities, labels are printed using a flexographic (flexo) printing machine. In this process, flexible printing plates transfer ink onto label material rolls. After printing, the labels are die-cut into required shapes and converted into rolls.

These label rolls can then be used in a barcode printer such as the TSC TE244. The printer prints barcodes, QR codes, batch numbers, or expiry dates on the labels.

Once printed, the labels are applied to products or packaging. At shops or warehouses, a barcode scanner reads the barcode during billing or inventory management.

Finally, the billing machine prints the customer receipt, completing the sales process
