Taffeta labels are the industry standard for garment care and branding when durability and cost-effectiveness are the top priorities. Often called "Wash Care Labels," they are specifically designed to survive the lifecycle of a garment, from the factory floor to years of home laundering.
Here is a detailed breakdown of Taffeta labels:
1. Material CompositionTaffeta is a crisp, plain-weave fabric made from synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon.
The Coating: Most taffeta used in the barcode industry is "cross-linked" or "nylon-bonded." This coating creates a smooth, paper-like surface that allows ink to bond deeply into the fabric.
Double-Sided: High-quality taffeta is usually coated on both sides, allowing for printing on the front (brand name) and the back (wash instructions).
Wash Resistance: Engineered to withstand domestic and industrial washing, stone washing, and enzyme washing without fraying or losing the print.
Tear Resistance: Unlike paper labels, taffeta is nearly impossible to tear by hand, ensuring the label stays attached to the garment.
"Paper-like" Feel: It is stiffer and crisper than Satin. This stiffness makes it easier for sewing machine operators to align and stitch into seams at high speeds.
Heat Stability: It can withstand the high heat of industrial ironing and steam pressing.
To achieve a permanent print that won't disappear in the wash, Taffeta labels must be used with the correct technology:
Thermal Transfer: This is the only reliable method for printing variable data (like sizes or batch codes).
Ribbon Choice: You must use a Wash-Resist Resin Ribbon (D110A or similar). Standard wax or wax-resin ribbons will wash off in the first cycle.
Garment Care: Washing instructions, fiber content (e.g., "100% Cotton"), and country of origin.
Size Tags: S, M, L, XL, and neck labels.
Home Textiles: Labels for pillows, mattresses, bedsheets, and curtains.
Carpets & Rugs: Often used for heavy-duty backing labels.
