Flexographic printing (Flexo printing) is a widely used printing method for producing custom labels, packaging labels, and stickers in large quantities. It uses flexible printing plates, fast-drying inks, and roll-to-roll printing technology to print on different materials such as paper, plastic, and film.
Step-by-Step Flexo Printing Process 1️⃣ Label Design PreparationThe first step is creating the custom label design on a computer using graphic design software.
The design may include:
Brand logo
Product name
Product information
Barcode or QR code
Color graphics
Manufacturing and expiry details
The design is prepared in separate color layers because each color will be printed using a different printing plate.
2️⃣ Plate MakingAfter finalizing the design, flexographic printing plates are made.
Plates are usually made from photopolymer material.
Each color requires one separate plate.
The plate contains a raised image of the design.
These plates are mounted on printing cylinders inside the flexo machine.
3️⃣ Material LoadingNext, the label material roll is loaded into the machine.
Common label materials include:
Paper labels
PP (Polypropylene) film
PET labels
BOPP film
Vinyl stickers
Some materials are used for waterproof labels.
4️⃣ Ink Transfer SystemFlexo printing uses a special ink transfer system:
Ink travels through these parts:
Ink Fountain → Anilox Roller → Printing Plate → Label Material
Ink fountain: Stores the printing ink
Anilox roller: Controls the amount of ink
Printing plate: Transfers the design onto the label material
The material moves continuously through the machine while printing.
5️⃣ Multi-Color PrintingFlexo machines have multiple printing stations.
Each station prints one color.
Example:
Station 1 → Yellow
Station 2 → Magenta
Station 3 → Cyan
Station 4 → Black
This process creates full-color custom labels.
6️⃣ Drying ProcessAfter each color is printed, the ink must dry quickly.
Drying methods include:
Hot air drying
UV curing
This prevents smudging and keeps the print sharp.
7️⃣ Lamination (Optional)For better durability, a lamination layer can be added.
Lamination provides:
Waterproof protection
Scratch resistance
Longer label life
This is commonly used for cosmetic, food, and chemical product labels.
8️⃣ Die CuttingAfter printing, the label roll goes through a die cutting process.
A metal die cutter cuts the labels into specific shapes such as:
Rectangle
Circle
Oval
Custom shapes
Finally:
Large rolls are cut into smaller rolls
Rolls are rewound for packaging and shipment
These rolls are ready to be used in label applicators or barcode printers.
Advantages of Flexo PrintingVery fast printing speed
Cost-effective for large quantities
Works on many materials
High quality color printing
Suitable for waterproof labels
